Jesus showdown with the Scribes and Pharisees continues this week in Mark 2:18-3:6. The people begin to question the legitimacy of Jesus ministry in regards to fasting, because all of the prominent religious factions of the time practiced such things, but they had yet to observe Jesus and His disciples do so. Jesus answers them in pure brilliance as usual, drawing analogies about a wedding feast, a bride and a bridegroom. We will also see two encounters with the Pharisees as they observe Jesus and the disciples on the Sabbath, and accuse them of doing what is unlawful.
Some questions for preparation and reflection:
- Why does Jesus begin talking about a wedding feast when they are questioning him about fasting?
- What is the significance of talking about "new wine" and "old wine skins"?
- Why did Jesus call himself "Lord of the Sabbath?
- What caused the Pharisees to be so angered as to begin to plot Jesus' death?
- Jesus seems to be pushing these religious leaders buttons on purpose. Is this the type of Jesus you know? Or does your Jesus never cross your will or make you uncomfortable?
