This week in SC Kids we concluded our Jonah curriculum with a lesson titled "Jesus is Better." And in this lesson we looked at all the different characters of the story of Jonah and learned how they actually point us to Jesus. Not only that but Jesus is a better version!
In a nutshell, Jesus is a better version of...
Jonah because when Jonah disobeyed God, Jesus always obeyed perfectly. Jonah went to one city to share his message, Jesus took his message to the entire world.
The sailors because they were terrified in the storm but when Jesus was caught in a storm (Matthew 8:23-27) he is not afraid at all. In fact, Jesus has complete control over the storm and makes it stop just by speaking to the wind and the waves.
The big fish because God sent the fish to save Jonah from drowning but God sends the better fish (Jesus) to save us all from our sins.
Jonah's message because Jonah tells them to stop sinning or be destroyed but Jesus was destroyed so that we could have the Holy Spirit to keep us from sinning.
The King of Nineveh who left his throne and took off his robes to repent with his people but Jesus left his throne in heaven, removed his royal robes to become the sin of his people and take their punishment.
The plant that God sent to protect Jonah from the sun because in Jesus we are protected from anything that can hurt or destroy us. Jesus is a better refuge and shelter.
As we learned about the story Jonah we found out that the story is less about Jonah and more about Jesus who God sent to save us and protect us from our sin.
This week help your kids reflect on how Jesus is better by reminding them of what we learned. Try to see what other things Jesus is a better version of. For example: Jesus is the better car that brings us into relationship with God. Jesus is the better cell phone that allows us to talk with God. Jesus is the better food because he is the bread of life.
